VM/SVM Products

The IBM’s VM operating system (VM/ESA and z/VM) allows the user to run multiple virtual machines on a single real computer. The z/VM versions support zSeries computers with the newest 64-bit z/Architecture. For more information about VM, visit the IBM website.

IBA has rich VM experience including development of software products for VM environment, deployment of VM systems and software products at client sites, and migration of client software to new computer platforms using VM.

Most of our extensions for the IBM VM basic system are delivered as program packages:

The Basic Extensions package includes:

    - Cyrillic support: input, output, copying, display, and sorting of Cyrillic data
    - Russian messaging and HELP
    - Support of locally produced peripherals
    - Protection against unauthorized access
    - Extensions and additions to system commands
    - Parameters transfer to the user program in the OS operating system format
    - Writing to OS operating system discs
    - Date and time setup for virtual machines
    - Documentation.

Disc Simulation Package

The Disc Simulation Package is designed to migrate operating systems and user data to discs of larger capacity or to a different architecture without the need to reprogram or replace the existing software. The Disc Simulation Package supports program simulation of IBM2311/2319/3330/3350 discs on IBM3380/3390 and FBA discs and compatibles. The modeling provides performance that is comparable with characteristics of the real disc.

System/370 Architecture Modeling Package

The System/370 Architecture Modeling Package provides functioning of a number of System/370 guest systems in VM/ESA and z/VM environments deployed on modern IBM servers that do not support System/370 architecture.

Requirements for virtual machines and guest operating systems:
    - The virtual machine should function in ESA mode
    - The maximum virtual memory should be 16MB
    - One virtual processor should be available
    - The use of DAT should be prohibited.

Other packages have additional functions specific for post-USSR users and are rarely used today.

VM/SVM Services and Solutions

IBA specialists have implemented numerous projects to migrate customer software to state-of-the-art hardware. They gained a wealth of experience in the following areas:
  • Use of VM systems as a buffer between modern hardware and out-of-date operating systems (based on S/370 or S/390 mainframes, or PC servers such as P/370 and P/390).
  • Source code recovery (through disassembling to Assembler and in some cases to high-level languages) from available load and object modules. We have performed this task for VM (SVM) and OS/390 (MVS) environments. Tools used for the purpose include a number of disassemblers and programs.
To apply a VM system efficiently, a special middleware, namely VM environment products, is of vital importance. We offer services on selection, delivery, installation and localization of the following classes of VM environment products: databases; PC-mainframe communication and interaction tools; and RACF-based data protection software.
